AmeriCorps Members from SF Bay Area Kick Off National Volunteer Week with Day Of Service
AmeriCorps members in the San Francisco area will collaborate with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department for day of service in Golden Gate Park.
San Francisco, California – April 10, 2009. AmeriCorps members will volunteer with San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department to kick off National Volunteer Week, which will be held April 19-25, 2009. With President Barack Obama’s recent call to service, the Northern California AmeriCorps InterCorps Council (ICC) will perform a day of service to inspire and encourage other community members to volunteer.
The Northern California AmeriCorps InterCorps Council (ICC) consists of AmeriCorps members from different nonprofit organizations throughout the Bay Area that work together to increase service to our community. Formed in November 2008, the ICC works to support active AmeriCorps members through service, social and networking opportunities. Previously, the InterCorps Council has partnered with youth organizations, a peace collaborative, as well as community members from all over the Bay Area to bring service to the community.
On Sunday April 19, 2009, AmeriCorps members will work in Golden Gate Park‘s ‘Bunny Hill’ on a nature restoration project.. AmeriCorps volunteers will gather at 9a. The Northern California AmeriCorps InterCorps Council (ICC) will use this day of service to celebrate the constant contribution AmeriCorps members make to the San Francisco community. AmeriCorps members will be on hand with information about AmeriCorps and ways to support AmeriCorps members in the community. The ICC has also invited community members to volunteer along side AmeriCorps members.
As communities across the country are being hit hard by economic downturn, AmeriCorps members are responding to the call for more service in their communities. The Northern California AmeriCorps InterCorps Council’s partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department will be the inaugural collaboration between these two entities.

AmeriCorps Members Join Force to Provide Support and Service as Inauguration Approaches
San Francisco, CA - January 12, 2009 - Across the United States, AmeriCorps members are serving our country and our communities. In the Bay Area alone, there are over 60 AmeriCorps members working to engage and help underserved communities as well as build capacity for area nonprofit organizations. In November 2008, active Bay Area AmeriCorps members joined forces to create the Northern California InterCorps Council. The Northern California InterCorps Council supports all local AmeriCorps members through social networking, agency collaboration and professional development. Since 1993, AmeriCorps members have quietly addressed the education, public safety, housing and health needs of marginalized populations across the country.
“The InterCorps Council brings together AmeriCorps members working on a myriad of different issues at nonprofit organizations throughout the Bay Area,” says Kai Wilson, Northern California InterCorps Councils’ creator and Outreach Coordinator for Rebuilding Together San Francisco. “In coming together, we [active AmeriCorps members] have found that we share the same concerns, ideas and interests.”
Across the country, InterCorps Councils have been implemented in various states and have proven to be a vital force in community service planning. Beyond service, The Northern California InterCorps Council also seeks to engage AmeriCorps members to provide information and support. “We have encountered AmeriCorps members without adequate housing and food resources. The Northern California InterCorps Council will provide support for members to overcome these challenges by offering emotional as well as monetary support for active members. We are here to let AmeriCorps members know we can help them.” AmeriCorps members receive a stipend of about $11, 000 for one-year of full-time service. “It is important that the community is aware of the sacrifices that AmeriCorps members make to create a livable community for all people.”
The Northern California InterCorps has formed at an exciting time. President-elect Barack Obama and the incoming administration have encouraged all Americans to start serving their communities on a regular basis. A representative from the Northern California InterCorps Council will be travelling to Washington DC for the inauguration.
The Northern California InterCorps Council is a member-run organization open to all AmeriCorps members living and working in the Bay Area. The group was formed in November 2008 and seeks to foster professional growth and development in the nonprofit social service sector.
